Rental Security Deposit Calculator

Use this tool to calculate the interest security deposit due on a residential lease or mobile home park rental agreement in Maryland.

How to use the calculator

Before you begin, you must review and accept the legal determinations. On mobile devices, you may need to scroll down to see the “I Understand and Accept these Determinations” button.

To calculate your interest, you will need to enter:

  • Start date (when the security deposit was paid)
  • End date of tenancy
  • County where the property is located
  • Amount of the security deposit

Note: The calculator tool can only be used for security deposits held on January 1, 2015 or later.

Important rules for security deposits

Please read this information before using the calculator:

  • Interest is only payable on security deposits of $50 or more.
  • Interest accrues monthly starting from the beginning of the tenancy
  • No interest is due unless the landlord has held the deposit for at least 6 months.
  • No interest is due for any period less than a full month (which may happen at the end of a lease).
  • Interest rules apply statewide (all Maryland counties)   

Interest rates

  • Leases before January 1, 2015: 3% per year
  • Leases after January 1, 2015: 1.5% or daily U.S. Treasury yield rate (whichever is greater)
    • The interest rate is taken from the first business day of the calendar year.
